The Campaign to Label Genetically Engineered Foods
From: The Campaign to Label Genetically Engineered Foods
The Campaign has launched an ACTION ALERT in response to a leaked memo
showing that at a United Nations meeting this week in Bangkok, the
Canadian government will attempt to overturn an international
moratorium on TERMINATOR seed technology:
Action link: http://www.thecampaign.org/alert_terminator.phpThe ACTION ALERT allows you to send an instant e-mail to
the following Canadian officials: 1) Prime Minister Paul Martin 2) Hon.
Andy Mitchell, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food 3) F.B.
Fadden, President, Canadian Food Inspection Agency
Terminator seeds are genetically engineered to be sterile
and thereby prevent farmers from saving seed. This is an extremely risky
and controversial technology. Some scientists worry about what
could happen if the terminator is unleashed on the environment.
They fear that terminator technology could migrate from one farm to
another, or from a farm to wild plants.
And activists in developing nations are concerned that the
technology would put too much power in the hands of a few

NOTE from Jan: Eileen tells me that the address for Robert MacLean, the head
of the Canadian delegation to this meeting in Bangkok, is in the message
below. She wrote to him and just got a note saying he is out of his
office... but do write, as surely his office would let him know if he is
getting a flood of letters from concerned citizens. How ironic that someone
from Environment Canada would be pushing sterile seed technology!!!
And I suggest you send copies of your letters to the agriculture Minister
and the critics from our opposition parties. Here's some information on how
to do that:
You can send letters postage free to any MP at: House of Commons, Ottawa,
ON, K1A 0A6. Or, by e-mail, take the first 5 letters of the last name, the
first letter of the first name and the common ending. So, Agriculture &
Agrifood Minister Andy Mitchell would be: , the
Conservative critic, Diane Finley would be .... the NDP
Agriculture critic is Charlie Angus, for the Bloc québecois it is Denise
Poirier-Rivard. It's a good idea to write to your MP as well. (NOTE: to make
sure you have the right contact info for MPs, use the 1-800-O-Canada #
(1-800-622-6232) in the blue pages.)
